What we are fighting to save

Our campaign has eight clear aims. Together they protect a landscape, an ecosystem and the communities that depend on them.

Save our shoreline – the beaches of Slapton Line, Torcross, Beesands and Hallsands
Save the Ley – the largest natural freshwater lake in South West England
Save Start Bay – the whole bay and the natural processes that feed our beaches
Save our connected communities – held together by the A379 coast road

Save our WW2 heritage – the D-Day rehearsal ground at Slapton Sands

Why?

Coastal erosion triggered by manmade environmental damage has breached the Slapton Line, severing the vital A379 coast road, and threatens to destroy a unique and beautiful wildlife habitat and ecosystem. Rising sea levels will only make this worse. Without comprehensive action now that tackles the underlying causes as well as addressing the symptoms this will inevitably happen.
We can prevent this if we work together to reverse the manmade damage and to harness the natural coastal processes to repair the damage. This will deliver a sustainable solution to the problem and help guard against the additional threat of rising sea levels
Twice in the last century our precious shoreline has made sacrifices for the nation – to extend Plymouth naval docks and to serve as the practice for D Day – it is now time that the nation repaid that sacrifice by reversing the man-made damage and putting it and our communities on a sustainable footing

It will cost more to do nothing than to do something

Our independent Cost of No Action study, prepared using UK Government methodology, found that acting now returns roughly nine pounds of benefit for every pound spent. Doing nothing means losing the A379, Slapton Ley and the communities that depend on this fragile land bridge.

As a first step we urgently need to raise £80,000 to fund the professional feasibility study and modelling that will prove the plan can work. Please help if you can.
